Ms Merkel's speech at Sunday night's Republican National Convention contained remarks about women that are sure to cause alarm to members of female constituencies worried about a Donald Trump administration.

The two nations should "seek friendship on these issues" and take risks to meet with US leaders in Asia about "free, honest exchanges rather than divisive or spurious ones based on sexism, sexual harassment and xenophobia to justify hate-based rhetoric and practices that perpetuate those problems at home," Angela Merkel said, adding that there should be cooperation, "but above all friendship among brothers in all we think and do".
